Started in 1959, The BackStoppers provides needed financial assistance and support to the spouses and dependent children of all police officers, firefighters and volunteer firefighters, and publicly-funded paramedics and EMTs in our coverage area who have lost their lives or suffered a catastrophic injury performing their duty.

Deaths from natural causes, illnesses, or injuries are outside the organization’s scope.

Our Assistance

  • Eliminates the family’s debt
  • Assists with tuition and educational costs from day care through university
  • Covers the cost of health and dental insurance
  • Reimburses for out-of-pocket medical expenses
  • Assists with miscellaneous extraordinary expenses
  • Provides financial counseling

Last year, we provided $3 million in assistance to families of fallen heroes with 66 dependent children between them.  $.90 of every dollar donated to The BackStoppers supported this assistance.  We have provided support to over 160 families since 1959.

The StLFD Lifesaving Foundation supports the St. Louis Fire Department by helping fund worthwhile projects within the Foundation’s two-fold mission:

  1. to promote saving lives of those who live, work, and visit the City of St. Louis;
  2. to protect the lives of professional lifesavers as they carry out their duties.

Since its inception, the Foundation has provided AEDs to the St. Louis Fire Department, created a public access to defibrillation program, provided bail-out harnesses to firefighters to prevent injury from falls when escaping a burning building, provided new 12-lead defibrillators with telemetry capability, and launched a Simulation Center to train SLFD EMS personnel.
